How big is your ecological footprint?
We all leave footprints behind us when we go for a walk. Our whole lifestyle also leaves an impression on our environment.
Every day we utilise various natural resources. The food we eat, the houses we live in and our transportation needs all take resources. Everything we do affects the environment in some way. We call that effect our "ecological footprint". We who live in the affluent parts of the world leave a large footprint, as we consume so many resources. Most of the world´s people, however, live in a different way than we do. The people who live in the third world have a very small ecological footprint by comparison.
In today´s world of global trade, our excessive consumption patterns leave their mark far from home. Every day most of us eat some itens of imported food. Parts of our ecological footprints are left on others continents.
